This exercise can be done seated or lying down. It consists of 2 sips of air in through the nose and 1 long exhale through the mouth. It is great because it connects to a natural function of the body that we often do after crying to calm us down or catch our breath. The double inhale maximally inflates the sacs in the lungs to their largest capacity and allows for a huge increase in breath. It also allows for the largest offload of CO2 and is one of the fastest ways to calm down when faced with stress or panic. This “Bunny Breath” can also be an accessible and helpful tool to calm kids down as well.
Bring awareness to your breath
Take 2 sips of air in through your nose
Exhale slowly through your mouth
Repeat for 5 or 6 rounds
Play around with lengthening and slowing the 2 sips and always making the exhale longer than the inhale.
